DEFYING GRAVITY

WAAPA’s award-winning Defying Gravity percussion ensemble creates a new world of sound - where exotic timbres, sparkling rhythms and seductive melodies mix with an astonishing array of percussion instruments from around the globe. Formed in 1987 and directed by Tim White, Defying Gravity now celebrates 35 years at the forefront of percussion in Australia: over 550 concerts, more than 120 world premieres, four national tours, two international tours, numerous radio and TV broadcasts, and sixty-five percussion graduates who have gone on to establish full-time careers in music. The ensemble has represented Australia at the Percussive Arts Society's International Convention, performed for Queen Elizabeth II, and played at venues ranging from Cottesloe Beach to outback WA. Defying Gravity is one of Australia’s most exciting, longest-established and most active new music ensembles.

‘Defying Gravity... played to an often wildly enthusiastic, capacity audience... Throughout the evening, I have rarely heard audience responses that were so wild – and entirely justified. This program was presented at a level that left one in no doubt that WA’s young percussionists can drum up a storm to equal anything of a similar kind anywhere across Australia. And much of this is due to the untiring efforts of Tim White, who heads WAAPA’s percussion department and, as Principal Percussionist of the WASO, leads by example.’ - Neville Cohn, The West Australian

“Magic is exactly what this group performs. They’re not just artists, they’re sorcerers-extraordinaire!” - Steve Spain, Harambee Magazine

‘Sublime percussion… and a magical delicacy of touch. Full of surprises and variety, this concert was a top notch effort from a dedicated ensemble.’ - Naomi Millett, The West Australian

‘Over the past two decades, this remarkable Perth-based ensemble has sent a small army of able young percussionists out into the world… Defying Gravity is right up there with the best because Tim White is up there with the best.’ - Neville Cohn, The West Australian

‘I’ve attended innumerable performances by Defying Gravity since its inception 25 years ago. And the spirit of adventure that informed those very first concerts was as gratifyingly in evidence as ever at its silver anniversary performance for a packed, wildly enthusiastic house on Thursday.’ - Neville Cohn, The West Australian

‘In one of the most sheerly exciting concerts offered in the city this year, the youthful Defying Gravity percussion ensemble presented a fascinatingly varied program that included a movement from Iannis Xenakis’ ‘Pleiades’. Percussion music doesn’t come much more difficult than this. It requires the coolest of heads, an iron nerve and mallet technique of the highest order to cope with its treacherous contra-rhythms. That these young percussionists possess these qualities in abundance was glowingly apparent as the ensemble’s lecturer Tim White guided his gifted charges to a thrilling close.’ - Neville Cohn, The West Australian

‘A thundering success... white-hot intensity... a riveting experience in both sonic and visual terms... unfettered listening pleasure’ - Neville Cohn, OZarts review

Defying Gravity produces a regular e-news bulletin, providing details of upcoming performances and projects. If you would like to join this email news list, please contact Tim White through the contact page.
